Sonic Lessons: Excavating Pedagogical Modalities through Sound

Sonic Lessons is a profound exploration of the interplay between space and sound, delving into the sonic journeys of marginalised bodies as they navigate visual-sonic landscapes characterised by both hypervisibility and invisibility. Using DJing rhythms as its guiding principle, this piece blends moving image, sound, installation, and relational sculpture to reveal the nuanced presence of the Black body within public spheres and private sanctuaries.

Situated as a heterotopia, Sonic Lessons transforms into an interactive sonic/listening library, where the conventional boundaries of time and space are redefined. It becomes a space where the essence of sound serves as a vessel for history, amplifying voices, images, and objects that signify Blackness. Each sonic-visual essay or lecture/class forms a canvas—a sonic-visual tapestry interwoven with defiance, resilience, and joy. In this heterotopian setting, viewers are invited to immerse themselves deeply, engaging with the stories embedded in every sound and image. DJing transcends entertainment to become a potent form of storytelling, creating a dynamic space of connection and reflection that bridges past and present, inviting participants to experience an alternate reality through sound and visuals.
