(b. 2001) I AM A LONDON BASED INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTIST WORKING ACROSS SOUND, DJING AND THE EXPLORATION OF AFRICAN DIASPORA NARRATIVES. MY PRACTICE, ROOTED IN BLACK FEMINISM, IS DEEPLY INFORMED BY RESEARCH AND THEORIES SUCH AS BELL HOOKS’ OPPOSITIONAL GAZE, WHICH CHALLENGES THE OBJECTIFICATION AND MARGINALISATION OF BLACK BODIES IN VISUAL CULTURE. THIS FRAMEWORK ALLOWS ME TO CRITICALLY ASSESS AND REINTERPRET REPRESENTATIONS OF BLACKNESS, PARTICULARLY FOCUSING ON THE BLACK FEMME BODY. MY PRACTICE UTILISES DIGITAL PLATFORMS LIKE YOUTUBE, INSTAGRAM, VIMEO, AND OTHER PLATFORMS ARCHIVAL/RESEARCH ‘INSTITUTIONS'.’ THESE PLATFORMS DEMOCRATISE ACCESS TO ARCHIVES IN WAYS THAT TRADITIONAL LIBRARIES AND CERTAIN INSTITUTIONS OFTEN DO NOT, MAKING THEM MORE NAVIGABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. BY SOURCING MATERIALS FROM THESE EVERYDAY MEDIA, I DECONSTRUCT HOW WE USE AND PERCEIVE THEM, REVEALING THEIR POTENTIAL AS RICH, RELATABLE RESOURCES THAT RIVAL FORMAL ARCHIVES. THESE PLATFORMS OFFER EXTENSIVE CONTENT ON THE IMAGING AND VOICES OF BLACK BODIES FROM VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES, OFTEN CENTRING THE BLACK BODY AND VOICE THROUGH ARCHIVES CREATED BY BLACK INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES. THIS FOCUS ALLOWS FOR A MORE NUANCED AND AUTHENTIC PORTRAYAL OF BLACK EXPERIENCES, PERSPECTIVES AND NARRATIVES.

MY WORK SPANS MIXING, SOUND, FILMMAKING, INSTALLATION, PERFORMANCE, SCENOGRAPHY, MIXED MEDIA, AND SCULPTURE. I ENGAGE IN MUSIC ARCHAEOLOGY AND SOUND EXCAVATIONS AS ANTI-COLONIAL TOOLS, USING THESE METHODS TO PRESERVE BLACK CULTURES, STORIES, AND ENVISION BLACK (ALTERNATE) FUTURES. BY ARCHIVING AND DOCUMENTING THROUGH SOUND, MUSIC, AND IMAGE MIXINF/RESEARCHING, AS WELL AS CREATING RELATIONAL SCULPTURES THAT ALLUDE TO SOUND, I EXPLORE THE POWER OF IMAGING AND IMAGES THROUGH SOUND AND OBJECTS. THESE SOUNDED OBJECTS AND SCULPTURAL ELEMENTS ARE INTEGRAL TO MY PRACTICE, AS THEY ENGAGE WITH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOUND AND FORM, CHALLENGING HOW WE PRIORITISE LANGUAGE, NARRATIVES, BODIES AND SPACES.

A PIVOTAL ASPECT OF MY ART IS ‘SOUNDSYSTEMING’, A SUBVERSIVE PRACTICE THAT EXAMINES THE INTERACTION OF BLACK BODIES WITH SPACES SHAPED BY SOUND. MY PUBLIC AND COMMUNITY-ORIENTED PROJECTS DELVE INTO SPACES RESONANT WITH SOUNDSYTEM CULTURE, AN ESSENTIAL EXPRESSION OF BLACK IDENTITY AND RESISTANCE. THROUGH THESE PROJECT, I CREATE IMMERSIVE ENVIRONMENTS THAT HIGHLIGHT THE CULTURAL AND SOCIAL DIMENSIONS OF BLACKNESS. I USE INSTALLATIONS AND PERFORMANCES TO INVITE THE AUDIENCE TO ENGAGE WITH THE COMPLEXITIES OF IDENTITY, HYPERVISIBILITY AND INVISIBILITY. BY QUESTIONING ESTABLISHED NORMS, MY WORK FOSTERS DIALOGUE ON THE DYNAMICS OF MARGINALISATION, REPRESENTATION AND SPACES. MY ARTISTIC JOURNEY IS A CONTINUOUS EXPLORATION OF THE NARRATIVES THAT SHAPE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLS, AIMING TO PRESERVE AND CELEBRATE BLACK CULTURAL LEGACIES WHILE ENVISIONING TRANSFORMATIVE FUTURES.
