europe is on the outskirts (2024)
Europe is on the Outskirts is a moving image film that explores African and diaspora cinema from the 1950s through the lenses of colonialism and neocolonialism, spanning the African continent and the Atlantic. This observational documentary utilises hip-hop techniques like sampling, remixing, and text to create a video montage, forming a visual archive. Europe is on the outskirts critiques the camera as a colonial technology that has historically distorted Black identities. By excavating African filmmakers’ works through an oppositional gaze, the film repositions the view of Black identity, exploring its intersections and dismantling Western-centric narratives. It constructs alternate realities to reaffirm African storytelling and address Black visibility and invisibility.
